Your Family’s Guide to 12 Long Weekends in 2026
Turning 3 Days into 4 (or 5!)
One of the easiest ways to extend your holiday is by adding a leave day before or after a midweek public holiday.
For example, if a holiday falls on a Thursday, taking Friday off turns it into a four-day weekend. You can also combine back-to-back events, such as Hari Raya Haji and Wesak Day. With just two extra days of leave, you can enjoy a six-day family break.
1. New Year (Thursday, January 1st)
Take Friday, January 2nd off and start the year with a 4-day weekend.
2. Thaipusam & Federal Territory Day (Sunday, February 1st)
If your state observes Thaipusam or Federal Territory Day, you’ll get Monday off as a replacement. That gives you Saturday to Monday off.
3. Chinese New Year (Tuesday February 17th – Wednesday February 18th)
Observed in most states. Add Monday, February 16th for a 5-day break from Saturday to Wednesday.
4. Hari Raya Aidilfitri (likely Saturday, March 21st & Sunday, March 22nd)
If both days are public holidays in your state, Monday becomes a replacement holiday. That gives you at least a 3-day weekend.
5. Labor Day (Friday, May 1st, 2025)
A built-in 3-day weekend from Friday to Sunday. No leave required.
6. Hari Raya Haji, Wesak Day, Agong’s Birthday (Wednesday, May 27th – Monday, June 1st)
If your state observes all three holidays, take Thursday and Friday off to enjoy a 6-day weekend. Monday is likely a replacement holiday for Wesak day if your state doesn’t celebrat Agong’s Birthday.
7. Awal Muharram (Wednesday, June 17th)
Add two leave days before or after to create a 5-day break.
8. Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday (Tuesday, August 25th)
Take Monday off and turn it into a 4-day weekend.
9. Merdeka Day (Monday, August 31st)

10. Malaysia Day (Wednesday, September 16th)
Create a 5-day break by adding leave on Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday.
11. Deepavali (Monday, October 20th)
Most states observe Deepavali. Since Deepavali falls on a Sunday, Monday becomes a replacement holiday. This gives you a 3-day weekend.
12. Christmas Day (Friday, December 25th)
