Booked your ticket to the tropics but unsure what to pack for your kids? We’ve got you covered with this ultimate kids packing list.

We travel a lot and we always make sure to pack the absolute essentials, such as motion sickness pills and vomit bags (more about that later) and basic toiletries – including nappies for long car trips or long flights.

It does happen that we forget something occasionally, but you don’t need to stress about that. Everything mentioned in the kids packing list below is available in Malaysia (except for personal travel documents and travel insurance). So, forgetting your kid’s swimwear is a great excuse to visit one of Kuala Lumpur’s shopping malls.

Clothes for Every Occasion

Getting ready for a short trip or weekend getaway? Make sure your kids are packed and ready for every occasion by preparing these clothes for your trip. Whether you’re going swimming, shopping, or museum hopping, you’ll have the best attire for a comfortable vacation.

Here’s the first part of our kids packing list, giving you some ideas of what clothes to pack when traveling to Kuala Lumpur with kids and young children:

  • T-shirts – T-shirts are a must-have for any trip, especially in a hot climate like Kuala Lumpur. Pack a few comfortable t-shirts that your child can wear all day long. Bringing along an extra outfit may add to being stylish, but it may actually also come in handy.

  • Pants/shorts – Pack a few pairs of pants or shorts your child can wear for different activities like exploring the city, visiting temples, or going to theme parks. It will always be a great idea to choose the most comfortable clothing according to your itinerary.

  • Underwear – Underwears are very essential when going on trips. Pack enough underwear for your child to last the entire trip, plus a few extra pairs in case of accidents.

  • Socks – Socks are important for keeping your child’s feet warm and dry. Pack a few pairs of socks your child can pair with their shoes or sandals.

  • Pajamas – You can’t have a good night’s sleep without pajamas. Keep your kids warm and cozy with a good pair of pajamas, so they can sleep like a baby at night and feel energized throughout the day!

  • Swimwear – Planning on an awesome excursion at Sunway Lagoon Park or any other water park? Swimwear is a must! Pack the proper swimwear for your child so they can feel protected and, at the same time, comfortable to move around while playing or swimming in the water.

  • Jacket/sweater – If your itinerary includes trips to the mountains surrounding Kuala Lumpur, you’ll want to pack a jacket or sweater for your child. The weather in the mountains can be cooler than in the city, so it’s important to be prepared.

  • Hat/cap for sun protection – Bringing a hat or cap is a great option for your kid! They don’t have to spend the whole trip squinting under the sun and definitely enjoy the natural landscape of each of your destinations.

  • Shoes – Always bring a good pair of shoes when traveling, especially if you plan on hiking and taking long walks. Rubber shoes are good for these activities; just make sure they’re extra comfy for your small children.

  • Sandals/slippers – Sandals or slippers are good for wearing around the hotel or at the beach. Pack a pair of sandals or slippers that your child will be comfortable wearing, and that will protect their feet from the sand or dirt.

  • Ziploc Bags – These can be extra helpful in keeping your clothes neat by letting you sort damp clothes accordingly. It can also protect your important items from mishaps like accidental spills. Additionally, you can also use these to store food separately, which will keep you organized for a number of days.

Toiletries and Personal Care

Don’t go anywhere without these toiletries and personal care essentials. Even when traveling, hygiene is very important. Having toiletries and personal care items ready will keep your kids safe and protected from germs or harmful rays of the sun. Plus, you always want your kids to look fresh and clean even while having fun on your planned family trip. Here are the essentials you’ll need for a handy-dandy toiletry bag!

  • Wet wipes & tissues – Wet wipes and tissues are essential for keeping your child clean and comfortable on the go. Pack a pack of wet wipes and a box of tissues to help you deal with any messes or accidents. Extremely useful for the entire family!

  • Kids insect repellent – You can never be too sure whether or not the place you’re visiting is packed with mosquitos or insects. If Malaysia is your destination, definitely pack up on mosquito repellent spray for kids and adults, mosquito patches to stick on your kids’ clothes, and afterbite to release itch should they get bitten after all.

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste – Practice good oral hygiene even on the go. Pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste to keep your child’s pearly whites clean and ready to devour their next meal.

  • Shampoo & conditioner – Again, travel-sized shampoo and conditioner are key to an easy and manageable hair day. Buying refillable travel bottles will make it easy to carry enough product for your great trip! Or, you can opt for travel-sized kits like this one from Johnson and Johnson.

  • Soap or body wash – Packing your own soap or body wash is important, especially if your kids have skin allergies and they can’t use the traditional soaps provided in hotels. It’s better to pack your own travel-sized soap or body wash or check with your accommodation provider or hotel if they provide kids amenities.

  • Kids sunscreen – The best tip to protect your child’s skin from Kuala Lumpur’s hot and humid climate is to always have a kid’s sunscreen with you. Pack a sunscreen high in SPF and suitable for children to use. We usually have the Aveeno sunscreen for kids as it’s suitable for kids with a sensitive skin.

  • Hair brush and hair ties – You’d want your child to enjoy your trip without worrying about their hair getting in the way. So make sure to have a handy-dandy hairbrush and hair ties with you at all times, so you can keep your kid’s hair neat and tidy.

  • Nappies (diapers) – including swim nappies – If your child is still in nappies, you’ll need to pack enough for the entire trip, plus a few extra, just in case. You’ll also need to pack swim nappies if you plan to spend time at the beach or pool.

  • Hand sanitiser – This may be a little thing, but a hand sanitiser or alcohol is an essential item whenever you’re traveling or just whenever you’re outside. You can bring a travel-size hand sanitizer in one of those cute holders so you can attach it to your bag and have it ready on the go.

Note: Travel-sized versions are ideal for saving space in your luggage. Plus, basic items such as shampoo, body wash, etc are usually provided by hotels.

Medications and First Aid

Emergency medications and first-aid are the first things you need to secure when traveling, whether for long or short trips. You’d want to prepare for all emergencies, so pack your first-aid kit and prepare your own medicine supply. In this comprehensive packing list, here are some travel essentials when it comes to healthcare.

  • Infant Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen – These pain relievers can help reduce fever and pain in infants. It’s also important to take note of the right dosage suitable for your child’s age and weight when administering the medicine to them.

  • Thermometer – A thermometer can be handy for checking your child’s temperature to see if they’re coming up with sickness.

  • Band-aids – Bring band-aids to aid your child’s wounds in case of accidental cuts and scrapes. This is an absolute item for your first aid kit.

  • Antiseptic wipes – Antiseptic wipes are useful for disinfecting and cleaning small wounds. You can also use them to clean surfaces contaminated with germs.

  • Allergy medications – If your child has allergies, remember to pack their allergy medications. This includes both over-the-counter and prescription medications.

  • Motion sickness pills/syrup – Traveling may trigger motion sickness in your child. It certainly does in our daughter. We always give her a motion sickness pill or motion sickness syrup and we have a stack of disposable vomit bags and wet wipes on hand. If your child is prone to getting sick in cars or planes, we recommend always being prepared with motion sickness medication to prevent or relieve the symptoms of motion sickness. Even if your child has never experienced motion sickness, it is still a good idea to pack some for your next trip.

Entertainment and Comfort Items

Traveling can quickly turn boring for kids if they don’t have something to keep them occupied and entertained for a few hours. Whether traveling for several hours in a plane or waiting at the hotel, you can bring a few items your kids can enjoy while on the go. It is essential to always keep the kids entertained to make a long flight enjoyable on your upcoming family vacation!

  • Toys – Toys are a great way to keep your kid entertained. Pack your kid’s favorite toy or add a new toy to their collection when you buy one from a gift shop. Further entertaining activities may also include puzzle pieces and card games, especially for the older kids!
  • Books – Books are also great for keeping your kids occupied. Bring some enjoyable books, like activity books they can flip through during the trip. If you need ideas about which book to take, check out these fun and educational travel books for kids.
  • Stuffed animals – Your child’s favorite stuffed animals can provide security and comfort while traveling. It can serve as their own travel companion for the whole trip! You can also ask or encourage your child to bring their own things, as doing so may increase their sense of comfort overall.

Snacks and Hydration

Although food is pretty much accessible and affordable in Kuala Lumpur, it doesn’t hurt to pack a few snacks to munch on the go. These are great to prepare for a quick snack or water break. Here are some suggestions for tasty snacks that each of the family member will love!

  • Granola bars – Granola bars are a great source of energy and nutrients, making them perfect for kids who need a burst of energy. They are also relatively mess-free, making them a good option for long car rides or plane journeys.

  • Crackers – Crackers are also good snacks to have for your younger children while traveling. And they’re even better when they come with a cheese, peanut butter, or creme filling. Either way, young kids will enjoy it!

  • Fruit or fruit pouches – Fruit pouches are a convenient and healthy snack option for kids. They are packed with vitamins and minerals and are also good for keeping your kids hydrated. Suitable as a perfect healthy snack for kids of all ages! You can choose to buy single-use fruit pouches, or you can opt for the reusable version if you prefer to make your own fruit juice before traveling. Of course, you can also pack some easy to eat hand fruit, such as apples or bananas.

  • Water bottle – Water is always essential, especially for kids who dehydrate more easily than adults. We always bring our own water bottle as most airports (in Asia at least) have refill stations so you can refill it before boarding your flight. Our favorite bottle is the Klean Kanteen Kids bottle as you can replace the sports cap with a spout. The sports cap is the only one our daughter hasn’t broken (yet). She tends to bite on straws and trust me as we say we’ve spent quite a lot of money on water bottles already.

Documents and Essentials

Of course, you can’t travel to another country without all the necessary documents and paperwork. Prepare these travel documents firsthand to ensure a smooth trip and a great family holiday with your kids.

  • Visa (if applicable) – You’ll need to apply for a visa in advance as official permission to enter another country. Click here for the latest visa requirements for Malaysia.

  • Passports – You’ll also need your passports with you when traveling. Double-check if you have it with you because it’s important for re-entering your country of citizenship. Make sure they are of easy access once you’re at the airport presenting the requirements. Note that, while a passport holder is great for protecting your passports at home, you’re usually requested to remove the passport from its holder when going through immigration.
  • Travel insurance – Plan ahead wisely and get travel insurance for emergencies that may happen during the trip. It can cover medical expenses, trip cancellations, and lost luggage, among other things. Read our article about the Best Travel Insurance for Malaysia for more information.

  • Credit cards – A credit card is a very convenient way to pay expenses even while traveling. You don’t have to keep a huge amount of bills with you. But be sure to have a backup plan in case your card declines.

  • Any paperwork related to your child’s medical history, including vaccination history and health insurance – Be sure to bring a copy of your child’s medical records with you in case of emergencies. And ensure you have a list of any medications your child takes. Readily available important documents will make the trip for the entire family smoother and more enjoyable!
