What is the Difference Between KLIA and KLIA2?

Before we dive into the main topic, let’s discuss the difference between KLIA and KLIA2 first. KLIA and KLIA2 refer to the same airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport; they’re just different terminals. In February 2023, KLIA and KLIA2 were officially rebranded as KLIA Terminal 1 and KLIA Terminal 2.

The main differences between the two airport terminals are:

  1. Year Opened: A Japanese architect named Kisho Kurokawa designed and built KLIA, and opened in 1988. Meanwhile, KLIA2 opened in 2014 and was built to accommodate more low-cost carriers in the country.
  2. Airlines: KLIA is mainly used by full-service airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, Singapore Airlines, and Cathay Pacific, while KLIA2 caters to budget airlines like AirAsia, Scoot, and others.
  3. Size: KLIA Terminal 1 is larger and can cater to up to 30 million passengers per annum. Although KLIA Terminal 1 is larger, KLIA Terminal 2 can accommodate more passengers up to 45 mppa.
  4. Facilities: Both terminals have facilities with airport lounges, ATMs, lockers, and shower facilities. They also have a gym, pharmacy, duty-free shops, children’s play area, spas, relaxing areas, etc. But KLIA Terminal 1 offers more exclusive services like banks, a movie lounge, a post office, prayer rooms, and more. KLIA Terminal 2 has the biggest airport shopping mall, with 70,000 square meters of retail space.
