Merdeka Day Parade

Malaysia’s Hari Merdeka (Independence Day) is celebrated every year on August 31 with a public celebration in Putrajaya at Dataran Putrajaya, featuring marching bands, cultural performances, and a strong show of national pride. It’s a free, open-air event that tends to draw large crowds from early morning.

Good to know before you go:

• Arrive early, ideally before 7am, as crowds build from dawn and good viewing spots fill up fast
• It’s outdoors in Kuala Lumpur’s August heat, so bring water, sunscreen, hats, and something to sit on
• Roads around the venue are often closed, so public transport is the easier option
• A small Malaysian flag for the kids to wave adds to the fun
