3 – Batu Caves

If your family loves to see nature at its best, make sure to add Batu Caves to your Kuala Lumpur itinerary. This spot is very kid-friendly as long as they’re up for tackling those 272 colorful, concrete steps. Conquering the steps is optional though; when we visited we just admired the big Buddha from below.

These caves, dating back 400 million years, are formed from limestone and are surrounded by a diverse array of over two hundred plant species. Keep an eye out for the playful monkeys that inhabit the area, although they pose no harm, it’s advisable to secure your belongings as they may try to grab them.

Once you’ve triumphed over the ascent, you’ll be greeted by the magnificent golden statue of Lord Murugan, standing tall and proud. Beyond that, lies the main cave temple complex known as the Cathedral Cave, dedicated to Lord Murugan. Inside, you’ll discover six intricately carved abodes and a temple, with daylight gracefully seeping through openings, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the limestone cave.

While there is no entrance fee for the Cathedral Cave, there are fees for exploring the Dark Cave and Ramayana Cave. Rest assured, these additional experiences are far from a waste of money.

Venturing into the Dark Cave will reward you with breathtaking cave formations, intriguing crawlies, and glimpses of wildlife. As the longest cave system, it promises an exhilarating adventure, so be prepared for an unforgettable experience.

The stunning view of Ramayana Cave, showcasing scenes from the Ramayana mythology, will leave you in awe. To reach the cave, you’ll encounter the Hanuman statue and cross a bridge. Additionally, the majestic sleeping statue of Kumbhkaran awaits your arrival.

Of course, the sights are so captivating that you won’t be able to resist capturing beautiful photos. However, before diving into all the excitement, it’s important to respect the cultural and religious significance of this attraction. Modest clothing is advised, and if needed, sarongs are available for rent to cover your shoulders.
